Lagos accommodation: Villa Zawaia B&B – an oasis in the city

Lagos accommodation: Villa Zawaia B&B – an oasis in the city

Its name means “lake” in Arabic, which is fitting as Villa Zawaia felt like an oasis in the city and brought an immediate sense of calm after a stressful journey. It is classed as a B&B but is far from your average and comparable with the standards of a boutique hotel. If you’re looking for Lagos accommodation, Villa Zawaia comes highly recommended.

Set the scene

Villa Zawaia’s name is a nod to the seaport’s history, namely the Moors, who are responsible for the fortification of Lagos, opening several shipping lines and renaming the city Zawaia.

Those looking for an understated authentic stay in the heart of Lagos need look no further. This adult-only B&B in a converted school is conveniently located along the winding lanes of the old town and a short distance from the city’s marina.

The B&B welcomes a tranquil setting under the theme of five natural elements: fire, earth, water, metal and wood. It is tastefully decorated and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to detail, offering a unique stay with extremely high standards.

Villa Zawaia is a small, independently owned, eight-room establishment set over two floors and consists of single and double rooms, a suite and apartments. The Zawaia apartment is two-bedroom, fully equipped, accommodates four and is separate from the rest of the villa. The loft Zawaia apartment accommodates three.

Location

The accommodation is centrally located on the doorstep of the old town and close to several beaches – Meia Praia Beach, Praia da Forte da Bandeira and Batata Beach.

It’s a ten-minute walk to the marina, from where you can pick up tours to the Ponte de Piedade rock formations. Numerous restaurants, shops and Fado are on the doorstep. Another nearby point of interest in Lagos’ history is the First European Slave Market, which I recommend visiting.

Lagos train station is 900 metres away, and the nearest airport is Faro Airport, 52.2 miles from the accommodation. There is no parking available at the property.

What can we expect from the bedrooms?

My stay was for two nights in the luxurious and modern Zawaia Suite, which accommodates two.

The suite’s decor aligns with its Moorish name. It is decorated stylishly with a brown and gold theme and complimented with eclectic furniture pieces. It’s both beautiful and relaxing and has a feeling of Zen with a comfortable bed that offers a good night’s sleep. No noise emanates from the surrounding areas despite its central location.

The bathroom come wet room is dreamy, grand and upscale with a double sink, sunken bath and double shower. Slippers, robe and toiletries are provided. The room is also equipped with a TV, safe, iron, hairdryer, fridge, extra bedding and tea and coffee making facilities. The patio doors lead onto a furnished terrace, which faces what feels like your own private pool in the partially covered garden area.

What about the service?

Villa Zawaia is hosted by Sarah & Angelo. Upon booking, Sarah was very responsive to emails and accommodating when delays meant a late arrival. Staff stay offsite, and there is no 24-hour reception, but I was still warmly welcomed by Angelo even though arriving near midnight.

The whole team are friendly and professional – from the cleaning staff, the lady at breakfast (whose name I have forgotten but had awesome tattoos) and Diego, who provided an excellent restaurant recommendation – O Pescador, which I also highly recommend.

What type of person stays here?

Villa Zawaia is adult only and ideal for solo, sustainable travellers, couples and more.

Is it worth it?

More than worth it. I’ve paid more for less. Villa Zawaia does not miss the fine details. When you do things with passion it is felt.

Prices may vary depending on the season, but my stay for two nights in the Zawaia Suite was €324.20. It’s the ideal Lagos accommodation. I don’t think pictures do it full justice. Check out the video below.
