The pacifying scent of lavender has been used for aromatherapy purposes for centuries. It also blooms over 25 acres at the organic, family-run, Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey during the summer months (June – August).
Getting to Mayfield Lavender Farm
Situated approximately 15 miles from central London, it’s a simple train ride from London Bridge or Victoria to West Croydon or Purley. From there, catch an Uber or hail a bus to purple paradise.
The fragrant scent attacks the nostrils before entering the gate and is as calming as the vibrant violet vista. The staff, clearly reaping the aromatherapy benefits, appear Zen and are very accommodating.
It’s a peaceful amble through nature and a lovely day out whether solo, coupled up or with the family. Though I did hear one child proclaim “this is the most boring day of my life!”. I wanted to tell him that there’s a lot more to come!
Take a leisurely walk through the gradient field or sit and people or bee watch (there are plenty!).
The gift shop sells all things lavender – sachets, oils, eau de toilette and much more. The Airstream trailer, which glimmers centre field, sells refreshments and other gifts.
The alfresco café, with picnic tables, is sheltered by gazebos for those hot summer days where you can refuel on lavender brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. Try the cake, shortbread and fudge – all lavender, of course. The uniquely tasting lavender cider comes highly recommended.
The traditional red telephone box provides a photo opportunity with a signature of London.
The farm is open Monday – Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm from 1 June until 31 August, though, some crops are harvested a couple of weeks prior. Peak season is July/August, and though there is no need to book, a weekday visit is advisable to avoid crowds during this period.
Tips: Avoid weekends
