When asked about Tisno restaurants, Restoran Carmen is top of my list of recommendations. Set on the waters of the Adriatic sea with heartwarming views, I can’t think of anywhere better to dine in this quaint little fishing village than this seafront restaurant.
Restoran Carmen is located away from the town on an unassuming side road and could easily be overlooked. I found it out of sheer curiosity, wondering where the road would lead, and I was happy with what I found.
The menu is vast and varied, but they are particularly renowned for their large selection of delicious seafood dishes, some of which are the best I have tasted not just in the area but at all. Add to that the unbeatable location on the water and service that is second to none. All of this combined makes Restoran Carmen the best Tisno restaurants I have experienced to date.
One note of caution when approaching the restaurant, is the little yapping dog. Ignore him – he doesn’t like anyone and is thankfully all bark and no bite.
Décor/atmosphere
It’s always the height of summer when I visit, so I have never sat inside, but outside, the décor and atmosphere can’t be beaten. They have the most idyllic waterfront terrace where the waves practically lap at your feet. Simple, calming and scenic – it’s a perfect setting.
The Food & drink
The food is Dalmatian and Mediterranean cuisine based on fish. They offer an extensive selection, and the waiters will happily recommend dishes, such as the delicious Scampi with a beautiful sauce that can be mopped up with some fresh bread. It’s messy but worth it and a firm, tasty favourite. Or, the shrimp ravioli with truffle sauce. Even if you’re a meat-eater, why not try the meaty fish such as the monkfish or the tuna steak with shrimp sauce. For dessert, the caramel semifreddo is enjoyable and light enough to squeeze in to end your meal. I have sampled numerous things on the menu and have never been disappointed.
To drink, choose from the selection of flavourful Croatian wines. As recommended by a Croatian friend of mine, with whom I shared a tipple, try the local wine from the Degarra Winery in the Zadar region who produce a limited series of top quality wines.
Service
The service is second to none. Notably, there is a real sense of warmth and passion about what they do. The two young men especially, who are generally front-of-house, are very efficient and personable.
Price
Prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food, service and environment, and depending on what you go for a meal will cost in the region of 250 Croatian Kuna, which equates to approximately £25.
Overall
I think I’ve said it all!
