Bohemia Place in Hackney host several markets, each worthy of a visit – Hackney Night Market, Hackney Vegan Market, Wasted Chic Fashion Market, and more. But one that particularly stands out to me for bringing extra flavour is the Black-Owned Hackney Market.
Showcasing the very best of up-and-coming Black-owned businesses in London, Black Owned Hackney Market, in collaboration with Black Eats LDN, takes place every third weekend of each month.
So what’s on offer?
Artisanal offerings include African and Caribbean vegan and non-vegan street food dishes and delights, sustainably-made clothing, some impressive African print outfits and accessories, natural beauty lines, handmade jewellery, homewares and more. There is no end to the talent, and to top it off, with live DJs playing, it’s like one big party while you shop.
As well as championing black-owned businesses the market is also a great social hangout. There are occasional brunch offerings from traders and a selection of bars with seating areas. It’s easy for the afternoon to slip by here, taking in the cultural vibes, and, though Hackney is now much gentrified, it is reminiscent of the old community feel combined with the new. The atmosphere is always buzzing, and it’s an ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
With the talent and creativity off the scale, spending money at Black-Owned Hackney Market is easy and painless to do. Besides, talking to the traders about their brand is inspiring, and their raw passion makes you want them to succeed. Apart from having a good afternoon, I always leave here with a sense of pride and a stark reminder that we’ve got mad skills.
